Sitting in the dark theater waiting for the movie to finally play isn’t my favorite thing to do. ‘Cause first the cinema has to show at least 15 minutes of previews for other films. Usually I wait outside. But this time I didn’t. So when the trailer for “50 Shades of Grey” started I made it through maybe 13 seconds before I had to shut my eyes. It both shocked and saddened me. Of course it’s R-rated so what should I expect? It’s a secular Hollywood film.
Tim Challies, a Christian blogger, author and book reviewer, in his article “50 Shades of Porn” discusses this book (and movie) and warns about the subtle and skillful way the industry is marketing pornogrophy and how women are now being targeted.
Quite frankly, Christians should not watch this film. The dangers of pornography are everywhere and it has caused a huge amount of devastation. Which is why I really appreciate Challies’ quote at the end of his article: “There is no reason to fear, but there is every reason to be aware. There is every reason to be humble and to doubt yourself. “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). There is every reason to make this a matter for prayer.”
